Öppet brev till Europeiska kommissionens ordförande Jean-Claude Juncker om gratulationen till Putin

Brussels, 22 March 2018

Jean-Claude Juncker,

President of the European Commission,

Dear President Juncker,

We, as Members of the European Parliament and Members of the Group of Friends of European Ukraine, wish to convey to you that we regret the way you chose to congratulate President Putin after so-called elections in Russia.

Firstly, we cannot accept this as elections and we continue to strongly believe that the people of Russia do deserve to be treated in a way that would correspond to the internationally-recognised standards and norms, including Russia’s own commitments and obligations.

Secondly, we are very disappointed that the opportunity was missed to remind to the Russian leader of illegal occupation and annexation of Crimea, a regrettable and unacceptable act of violation of international law, which the European Union does not recognise and condemns. Full respect of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty is exactly what the EU expects from Russia, as its contribution to restoration of both pan-European security and positive relations with the EU.

Sincerely,
