Press statement

The Single Seat campaign wants a European Parliament that is more efficient, less polluting, less costly and closer to citizens.

In today’s debate we reach out to France to engage in dialogue for the re-launching of a Europe closer to citizens.

We respect Strasbourg as an important symbol for peace and reconciliation, for us and generations to come. But we must find new ways to pay tribute to the values of peace and freedom in Europe.

We also respect the right of France to host European bodies that reflects its prominent role in the EU. At the same time we should not allow the symbol of peace in Europe to become a symbol of waste.

It is important to understand that we can only succeed in dialogue with France and the Presidency of the European Union.

There is no mission impossible if citizens ask us for it!

Therefore today we launch the following Call of Action:

  1. To send an EP delegation to meet with the President of France.
  2. To invite France to consider submitting an offer to host the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in the city of Strasbourg.
  3. To adopt a Resolution on the seats of the European Parliament in the September session.
  4. To initiate a legislative report based on the European Parliament right under Art.48 of TEU to ask the Council for Treaty change in order for the EP to decide on its seat, as called for in the Häfner-Fox Report in 2013.
  5. To ask The Estonian Presidency to put the single seat on the agenda of the next European Council and of its Presidency.
  6. To ask The President of the European Parliament to raise the issue in his speech at the next European Council in October.
  7. To ask the Bureau of the European Parliament to draft a roadmap for a single seat outlining win-win options.
  8. The President of the European Parliament to launch a Eurobarometer on single seat.
